alot of these "remasters" are actually not the same as original games when they came out first
for example gta san andreas is missing alota songs... gta vice city has alota scenes cut out because a certain group of people felt a certain way etc..
og versions of alot of these videogames are the best.. and i need a ps2 now.. my first one ever broke years ago and i thought i would never need it.. boy was i wrong

They're worth looking into! I have 3 myself (one that I got back around the time PS2's came out and the other two I found at thrift stores -- just had to dust the other two out and they were good to go).
What model are you looking into? Mine are all the fat ones. They run pretty well and I've been enjoying playing some older games on them.

If you're able to check them both out to see the condition of them. If the fat one is in better shape, go with that one. Heard that some of the slim line models had a recall. www.cnet.com/news/sony-recalls-slim-line-ps2-power-adapters/That article mentions what models were affected. Double check the model number of the slim to make sure it isn't one of the recalled ones.

I hope it works out for you. Also, dvd's don't play nice with them (meaning movies). Found out about this via a used game store I went to some years back. The person working there said it destroys the drive. This was after I had an issue with my system after playing one. Haven't played a single dvd in mine in years, apart from games themselves.
