I just read the article and I understand why the NHL doesn't want to do it, especially at that time.
I have a feeling, however, that some players whom really want to go will still go and play for their home countries. They will have to work it out with their teams, obviously, if they want to do it.
Technically paid athletes shouldn't be in the Olympics, at least in my view, but it was always fun watching the NHL players in the Olympics.

I agree with your last statement. I missed out on a lot because of the rules back in the early 80s. We couldn't take items or money due to the fact that we had been projected to be on the Australian National Soccer team and possible Olympics.
I also don't agree with the NHL players doing it out of fear of injury. NHL is more important than the Olympics!

I see both sides to this story. And all are fair points. It's a tough decision, especially when players want to play and represent their country. Ovechkin says he's playing whether the league likes it or not, we'll see. bleacherreport.com/articles/2701780-alex-ovechkin-says-he-will-still-play-for-russia-in-2018-olympic-gamesBut nothing beats a group of amateur players that nobody knows about, with a passion for hockey, trying out to be part of an Olympic hockey team as opposed to professionals automatically getting a free pass to be on the team.

If the 2018 Olympics are missed they will probably miss the 2020 as well, saw something saying the 2020 were tentative on the 2018 Olympics.
