Every Metal Gear game was made as if it were the last one, which is why I think the story should've ended at MGS2 because 4 is when that starts to bite the series in the ass. MGS3 was fine as a standalone game. yeah that kinda sucks cause it could have been more epic if he kinda thought it through more 4 was only crazy cause of the nanomachines thing but the way he put all 3 games together was completely epic.. you cant understand mgs 4 unless you play mgs 1 - 3 first 2 was a very good game too tho.. to me it had the strongest propaganda out of all of them lol.. at one point i was like "wtf am i playing" lol.. its a very good game tho the only game i have actual problems with is mgs v and i already expressed them pretty much

The questions MGS2 left questions unanswered because they weren't meant to be answered. You were never supposed to know why Vamp has his powers and how several other things work, nanomachines had to be used so liberally it's a meme. You were never meant to know who the patriots were, so they realized most of the MGS3 crew doesn't have a place in the rest of the story yet and made them the series antagonists out of nowhere. Raiden's story was done, but now he's a cyborg for some reason. There's more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. So yeah, you can't understand MGS 4 unless you play 1-3, but you also can't understand it unless you play PW, 5, and Revengeance as well. MGS4 made several missteps to have its unwanted conclusion and the main reason it works today is because future games picked up the pieces.
